Thanks to National Lottery players we are delivering a 3 year ‘Revealing Rural Heritage’ project funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund. This project will bring schools and community groups on to the farm to learn about rural heritage in the Sperrins and what life was like for people living in this area over the last 400 years.
During the farm visits we will explore the landscape for signs of our past including the marks left by old farming practices such as the stonewall boundaries, lazy-beds, lime kilns and the old homesteads. Groups will learn direct from farmers about the change in farming practices over the centuries and the changes in livestock to suit the advances in agriculture. Hands-on activities will help children experience a snapshot of life in the past.
Prior generations relied on nature and the resources around them much more than we do today, and by exploring the hedgerows, streams, and peatlands we will discover what plants and techniques were used to help them survive on the land. As a sheep farm we will demonstrate the way that their fleece was used by past generations and discuss what happens to it today.
All topics will be interactive with hands-on activities helping visitors experience a snapshot of life in the past.
